Sample Reflective Essay #1
Author: would rather remain anonymous
As an English major I have discovered to comprehend the peaceful, yet exhilarating moment when my mind engages with an author’s ideas on a page. As Toni Morrison says into the Dancing Mind , “reading is to experience one’s own mind dancing with another’s.” In my own early days as a college student, i needed to know the “true” concept of a work or what the author intended, however, I have now realized this would void literature of its most complexities that are noteworthy. Individual interpretations bring varied insights to a work and it’s also also interesting to point out messages the author might not s/he have realized within the piece.
We have always been a thinker, but throughout my coursework, We have greatly sharpened my critical analysis skills. Instead of focusing on proposed meanings or biographical background, We have learned to continuously ask “why” on lots of levels. I challenge myself to dig into a text as deeply as possible and unpack every detail to build up a close that is satisfying. Also, by reading multiple novels by the same author I have learned to identify different writing styles while making connections that weave texts together; this helped me develop a deeper knowledge of the novels. Once I look at one of my freshman level novels to discover clean pages, I realize that I didn’t actively browse the book. I assume you can say because I am able to connect back with my initial insights marked on the page that I have learned to read with a pen, which has drastically taken my writing to a new level.
Writing had for ages been one of my strengths, nonetheless it was challenging to take that step that is initial the senior school, five-paragraph essay form that constricted my ideas for such a long time. Moving past this form, however, has greatly opened my mind. My thoughts are now able to be much more complex because I have learned just how to sustain a logical argument in an manner that is organized. My writing is actually increasingly more concise and I no longer have room for additional “fluff” or “padding.” Another improvement is my ability to point out multiple complexities within a text, in place of staying with one-sided arguments in my own papers. Furthermore, learning how to locate peer reviewed journal articles and order books through interlibrary loan has significantly widened the scope of my research, which includes result in more papers that are scholarly credible references. My writing can be so a great deal more interesting than it once was.
It is hard to determine gaps within my knowledge as an English major, only because personally i think like We have learned a great deal. Personally I think that I have largely expanded my literary analysis and writing skills, but i must be ready to teach high school students their required literature. I do believe it might be beneficial to identify commonly taught novels inside our local schools that are high study them myself. By studying the required literature and thinking on how to teach it, i am going to have a foundation that is sturdy work from once i will be into the classroom.
